A new surge of asylum seekers are entering Canada from the United States, the country’s immigration minister said Friday.
The U.S. has been one of the main sources of refugees coming to Canada.
The country’s Immigration and Refugee Board has approved more than 400 refugees in the past month.
The number of asylum applications from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) surged by more than 50 per cent in October alone, from 7,000 to 15,000, according to data from the Immigration and Refugees Board.
“The increase in asylum applications is concerning,” said Liberal immigration critic David Christopherson.
